Hide and Go Squeak

Ruby-throated Hummingbird

I’ve been recooperating from yet another hospital stay, so have been spending quite a bit of time watching our juvenile R.T. Hummingbirds from a bedroom window, where I have a great view of my hummingbird/butterfly garden. If I had to pick a ‘favorite’ bird, it would be a hummingbird.. for many reasons.

They love to hide within the towering red monarda blossoms, squeaking and darting out at each other. So far there are at least 3 juveniles and by summers end we often have up to 10 of them here. The adults are still joining them at the nectar feeders and flowers both, but the juveniles are much more aggressive and tolerant than the adults. The youngsters are very vocal while their antics and posturing are hilarious to watch. They’re the ultimate ‘body slammers’ and seem to take great delight in literally knocking each other for a loop. It’s impossible not to smile while watching a hummingbird.. they are truly harbingers of joy and so much more.
